PPS
starts October 1st, 2000, what does it bring and how does this
concern you?
A
major change in Home Health starts October 1, 2000. At Sigma Health
Care, we put every effort to be ready for such change. We have
updated our software and hardware and we are introducing many
changes to accommodate this new system. Our main focus continues
to be quality care for our patients, prompt reporting to our physicians,
and faster communication with patients and caregivers.
What
you need to know:
- Patients
will be certified for 60-day episodes, but there is no limit
as to how many episodes a patient can have as long as he/she
meets the Medicare criteria for home care.
- Patients
will no longer be capped as to how much they can get per year
for treatment in the home.
- Long
term patients can be managed better by this system.
- Home
health can provide other services such as respiratory therapy
and nutrition counseling by licensed nutritionists if requested
by the physicians to improve the quality of patient care.
- Most
Supplies will be directly provided by the home health agency
and not by medical suppliers until patient is discharged.
-
Distinguishing between Home Health Rehab and in-home rehab by
outpatient therapy services is essential. Medicare will no longer
allow PT, OT or ST to be provided by an outpatient rehab therapy
in the home when those patients still in need for other home
health services. Be aware that unlike part B Services, Home
health is covered 100% by Medicare home health benefits and
no co-payment is required.
